Christian Lacroix Autumn/Winter 2002-2003 (Couture)

In this season,the collection of couture were mainly used the mono-chromatic scheme.We can see that there was one hue, but we can found that there were different value.It change the brightness of the cloths.Also,it was a set of color family.It make the clothing become harmony.

However,we can find a special case of this collection.Lacroix used the mono-chromatic scheme,but the model wore a pair of red pantyhose.It was a kind of split complements.It can enhance the impression of the item.

This is the T-shirt that Lacroix design for the Environmental Justice Foundation in conjunction with their 'Pick Your Cotton Carefully' Campaign.


Lacroix used the Complementary Color Scheme.He match green and red on the T-shirt.Because the background color of the T-shirt is white,so that the prints are totally matched.

In this season,Lacroix colored his design as candy,which means the colors are rich.The bayadere is the theme color of this collection.So that we can see different match on it.



Firstly,Lacroix used the Mono-chromatic Color Scheme.They only contain one hue,but the value of color are different.Besides the bayadere color,we can see the variation of the color.It lead the image become plentiful.




Furthermore,Lacroix also used the Analogous and Complimentary Color Scheme.As we can see on the above picture.They are the combination of blue,red and green.They include analogic colors and complimentary.Red and Yellow,Blue and Yellow are analogic colors,but Red and Blue are complimentary colors.


The other example of Analogous and Complimentary Color Scheme.The combination of yellow,red and violet.However,violet only appear on the shoulder as a decoration.So the whole image is rich but concordance.



Another color feature of this collection is low in value.Due to the warmness of Spring and Summer.Low value color is likely to use during this season.So the image is soft.

This season Lacroix used red and violet as the fundamental colours of the ready-to-wear collection.We can see that most of cloths combines withs these two colours.


For example,the picture show on the top,the used color is red,but it make use of the emphasis of color scheme.The base color is red,because of the change of chroma,so we can find red and pink on that.Even the pantyhose also use the purplish red to match the cloth.

Lacroix used violet as the fundamental colors like the above pictures.This cloth use the analogues color scheme.It used violet and blue to enrich the cloth.Beside analogues color scheme,Lacroix also used complementary color scheme,because we can find a little bit yellow on the cloth.

This Ready-to-Wear of Christain Lacroix,the theme colors are black,red and brown.The brown one include the colors which are earth tone.Also,the dominant color scheme of this season is Achromatic Colors Scheme and Mono-chromatic Color Scheme.

An example of Mono-chromatic Color Scheme.

In Mono-chromatic scheme,most of clothing only contain one colors.However,Lacroix has changed the value of the color.

In addition,Lacroix also used other color scheme,the Analogous Color Scheme.It was the combination of red and orange.Due to they are similar,so it make the image become harmony.However,we can still find the different two colors.

There wan several items coloured in low value.Although there were many colors found on the clothing,total image still harmony.Tints make the color matching rich but sense of peace.

Class exercise - Burberry pattern and Scotland pattern analysis

The pattern of Burberry.

It is mono-chormatic scheme.The dominant color is blue of this one.The combination of this pattern is gradual change of the color value.

It is mono-chormatic scheme too,but the dominant color of this one is red.It combine with different value of red to make it.

The pattern of Scotland Pattern.

It is the Complementary Color Scheme.It is the combination of red and green.

In this season,Lacroix’s ready-to-wear collection can divided into two parts,one was colorful basic and one was pure tone.Firstly,one of them is used very plain color,basically used white.For example,the first picture shows cloth used the achromatic scheme.This is a pure white dress.Some of them may used the ornament to prettify,just like the second picture,it used the black waist band to prettify the plain white dress.

However,there was another cloth they used white mixed with other light color,such as shocking pink.The pink only appeared on a very little part of the dress.It made a very strong contrast of the color.

Moreover,Lacroix also used the repetition of colors to show the unity of colors.For example,he used white,light pink and red.Due to the gradual change of the value,it expressed the harmony of the colors.

Secondly,the other collection of this season,Lacroix used white mix with fancy colors.It mean that we can find many colors on one cloth,at least four colors on it.For example,the plain pants and stripped shirt with the fancy jacket.

To conclude of this season,Lacroix used the basic color,the white to form theme.As we can see that,most of the basic tone is soft because the white color.Some of sharp and light color added on the apparel items were very eye catching.
